The Best Ice Cream Spots in Niagara

There are some summer traditions that just never get old. A walk along the waterfront, an evening drive with the windows down, watching the sunset over the lake…and of course, stopping for ice cream.

One of the things we love most about living in Niagara is that no matter where your summer plans take you, there’s usually a fantastic local ice cream shop nearby. From handcrafted gelato and small-batch favourites to nostalgic dairy bars that have become local landmarks, every stop has its own personality.

Whether you’re spending the day at the beach, exploring wine country, or wandering through one of Niagara’s charming downtowns, here are some of our favourite places to grab a sweet treat this summer.

FOR A DAY BY THE WATER

There’s something about ice cream that just tastes better near the lake.

Old Port Dairy Bar | Port Dalhousie

A true summertime staple in Port Dalhousie, Old Port Dairy Bar has been serving frozen treats just steps from the beach for generations. Known for its classic soft serve, hard ice cream, sundaes, and milkshakes, it’s the perfect stop before or after a walk along the pier. Whether you’re spending the afternoon by the lake or catching the sunset, an ice cream from Old Port Dairy Bar has become part of the Port Dalhousie experience for many Niagara families.

Danny’s Ice Cream Hut | Port Colborne

For many families, a visit to Port Colborne isn’t complete without a stop at Danny’s Ice Cream Hut. The longtime local favourite it known for generous portions, classic soft serve, hard ice cream, and all the nostalgic treats you’d hope to find on a summer day. Located just minutes from the waterfront, it’s the perfect place to cool off after a day at the beach, exploring downtown, or watching the ships pass through the Welland Canal.

Canalside Cones | St. Catharines

Sometimes the setting is just as memorable as the ice cream. Located along the WElland Canal, Canalside Cones pairs generous scoops with one of the best views in the region. Grab your favourite flavour, find a bench along the trail, and watch ships pass through the canal. It’s the perfect excuse to combine an afternoon walk or bike ride with a sweet treat.

FOR A SCENIC SUMMER DRIVE

Some of Niagara’s best cream shops are destinations in themselves.

Located beside Merrittville Speedway, this seasonal stop has become a summer tradition for many Niagara families. Merrittville Big Scoop is known for generous portions of Kawartha Dairy ice cream, creative soft serve treats, and plenty of outdoor seating. If you’re spending the evening at the races or simply out for a country drive, it’s an easy stop that always delivers.

Jazzy Scoops | Stevensville

A hidden gem in Fort Erie, Jazzy Scoops has quickly become a favourite for locals looking for generous portions and friendly service. Their menu features everything from classic cones to fun sundaes, making it an easy stop for families exploring the south end of Niagara. Sometimes it’s the smaller neighbourhood spots that become your go-to summer tradition.

Good Manners has earned a loyal following for its handcrafted, small-batch ice cream and ever-changing lineup of creative flavours. Made with locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, every scoop reflects the care and craftsmanship that goes into the process. The bright, cheerful shop and unique flavour combinations make it a favourite destination for both locals and visits exploring Niagara’s wine country.

For Exploring Niagara's Charming Downtowns

One of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon is simply wandering through one of Niagara’s beautiful communities with an ice cream in hand.

Avondale Dairy Bar | Niagara-on-the-Lake

No list of Niagara ice cream is complete without Avondale Dairy Bar. A local institution for generations, they’re famous for making their own small-batch ice cream using fresh dairy from the family farm. The creamy texture, unique seasonal flavours, and nostalgic atmosphere keep people coming back year after year. Don’t be surprised if there’s a lineup. It’s part of the experience, and it’s well worth the wait.

With over 20 flavours, classic banana splits, milkshakes, floats, and giant waffle cones, it’s the kind of place that feels made for summer evenings. The nostalgic atmosphere, friendly service, and patio seating make it a fun stop whether you’re exploring Queen Street or simply treating yourself after dinner.

If gelato is your frozen treat of choice, Niagara has some incredible options.

Chocolates Etc. | St. Catharines
