THE PERFECT FALL WEEKEND IN NIAGARA: A LOCAL'S GUIDE

There’s something about fall in Niagara that makes you want to get out and enjoy it while it lasts. The vineyards turn golden, farms fill up with pumpkins, local cafés bring out their seasonal favourites, and there always seems to be another event, market, or community gathering happening somewhere nearby.
Whether you’re looking for something to do with the kids, planning a night out, searching for the best fall colours, or simply looking for an excuse to explore somewhere new, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season close to home.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to make the most of fall in Niagara this year.
Get Out and See the Fall Colours
Take a Drive Through Wine Country
You don’t always need a specific destination to enjoy fall in Niagara. Take a drive through Jordan, Vineland, Beamsville, and Niagara-on-the-Lake and let the changing vineyards and back roads be the scenery.
For an easy combination of fall views, local food, and wine, make a few stops along the way. Pick up cheese at a local creamery, stop at a farm stand, or find a small winery where you can sit outside with a glass of wine while the weather still cooperates.
A few local stops to add to the drive:
Sons & Daughters Winery in Pelham for wine, pizza, and seasonal bites in a relaxed setting.
Walker Ridge Farm for apples, pears, and other seasonal farm finds.
13th Street Winery for wine, a bakery stop, and a walk through the sculpture garden.
Go for a Fall Hike
October is a great time to explore Niagara’s trails. The cooler weather makes longer walks more comfortable, and the Escarpment is especially beautiful when the leaves start changing.
Try Short Hills Provincial Park, Balls Falls, Queenston Heights, or the trails around the Niagara Gorge. You can make the outing as ambitious or as simple as you like; even a short walk followed by coffee and a pastry counts.
If you’re heading out specifically to see the colours, the middle of October is typically a particularly good time to explore the Niagara Parkway, the Niagara Gorge, and the Niagara Escarpment.
Make a Day of Pumpkin Season
Fall isn’t complete without at least one trip to a pumpkin patch.
For families, Bry-Anne Farms in Fenwick is a great local option. Its Great Pumpkin Patch runs throughout October, with wagon rides, a straw maze, farm animals and a Pumpkin Discovery Centre. You can also pick up pumpkins, apples, cider and some of the farm’s homemade baking while you’re there.
Warner Ranch & Pumpkin Farm in Welland is another family-friendly stop, with pumpkins, animals, outdoor activities and plenty of room for kids to burn off some energy.
And in Grimsby, Puddicombe Farms turns the entire farm into a fall destination with its It’s Fall, Ya’ll weekends. Think pumpkins, apples, wagon and train rides, games, scavenger hunts, fresh-pressed cider, and plenty of seasonal treats.
For a quieter farm outing, simply visit one of Niagara’s roadside markets and pick up a pumpkin, some apples, and a few things for the kitchen. Sometimes that’s all you need to make it feel like fall.
Find a New Favourite Local Cafe
Fall is probably the best season for café hopping.
Grab a coffee, find a cozy corner, and take your time. Or pick up something warm and make it part of a walk around one of Niagara’s downtowns.
A few local spots worth adding to your list:
Brindle Food Co. — tucked into downtown St. Catharines, this small café is known for from-scratch baking, coffee and a small but memorable savoury menu.
Pique-Nique — a neighbourhood café and wine bar with coffee, bread, pastries and small plates. It’s the kind of place that works equally well for a morning coffee or an afternoon glass of wine.
de la terre Bakery + Café — stop in for naturally leavened breads, pastries and coffee, and don’t be surprised if you leave with more than you planned.
Shop at a Local Fall Market
One of the easiest ways to experience Niagara in the fall is to see what local growers, bakers, and makers are bringing to market.
The St. Catharines Farmers’ Market runs year-round on Saturdays at Market Square, with everything from local produce and baked goods to cheese, honey, prepared foods and handmade products. The market also has special fall programming, including its annual pumpkins and fall squash feature.
If you’re in Niagara-on-the-Lake, look for seasonal markets and farm stands throughout the countryside. Fall is a particularly good time to pick up local apples, squash, preserves, baked goods, and other ingredients to bring home.
And don’t overlook the smaller roadside stands. Some of our favourite fall finds happen when we’re simply driving by and decide to stop.
Go Apple Picking
You don’t necessarily have to spend an entire afternoon picking fruit to enjoy Niagara’s apple season.
Stop by one of the region’s farm markets for fresh apples, cider, pies, and other fall favourites. Walker Ridge Farm is one local option worth adding to your list, with apples and pears available during the fall season.
For a more traditional farm experience, look for farms offering pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, or other seasonal produce while the crops are available.
And if you do go apple picking, make sure you leave enough room in the car for the cider, butter tarts, and everything else you inevitably end up taking home.
Go to an IceDogs Game
Fall isn’t just about farms and pumpkins.
The Niagara IceDogs are back at the Meridian Centre for another season, making a game an easy option when you’re looking for something to do on a Friday or Saturday night.
Make a night of it by grabbing dinner downtown first, then walking over to the game.
For dinner, try oddBird., Fiddler's Pour House, Fat Rabbit, or The Merchant Ale House, depending on what kind of night you’re after. If you want to keep the evening going afterward, there are plenty of downtown spots within walking distance of the arena.
It’s a simple night out, but sometimes those are the best ones.
Embrace the Halloween Season
If Halloween is your thing, Niagara has no shortage of ways to get into the spirit.
For families, there are pumpkin festivals, trick-or-treat trails, and Halloween activities happening throughout the region. Frightmare in the Falls returns to Niagara Falls beginning October 23, while the Clifton Hill Halloween Trick or Treat Trail takes place October 25.
There are also Halloween events happening closer to home, including community events and family programming in St. Catharines, Thorold, Welland, and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
For something a little different, History on Tap at Old Fort Erie takes place October 24 and combines local history, food, craft beer, and live entertainment for an adults-only evening.
And on October 31, Niagara Falls will have Halloween programming happening throughout the city, including family activities at Canada One Outlets.
'Tis the Pumpkin-Spiced Season
The best part about fall in Niagara is that there’s no single way to enjoy it.
You can spend the afternoon at a pumpkin farm with the kids, find a new café, hike through the escarpment, pick up something fresh at the farmers’ market, spend an evening downtown, or simply take a drive and see where it leads.
And while the big seasonal events are always fun, some of our favourite fall days are built around the smaller local businesses and places that make Niagara feel like home.
So grab a coffee, bring a sweater, and get out there. There’s still plenty of fall left to enjoy.
